Offshore Container ISO Safety Standards

As a member of the working group responsible for developing a new ISO standard for offshore containers, I'm pleased to be able to report that this has now been submitted to ISO for distribution to member countries for comment and feedback. The ISO 10855 standard will replace the existing European Standard for Offshore Freight Containers, EN 12079.

As the only equipment manufacturer represented at the working group meetings (which have been held in cities all over the world including Oslo, Copenhagen, Rio, Houston, Aberdeen and London ) Suretank's interest is to understand the direction the new standards are taking, but also to provide valuable input into what is practical and cost-effective from both the equipment manufacturers perspective and our customers.

Suretank has invested heavily in equipment and processes to ensure a high quality product is produced at ALL our factories worldwide and to position us as a world leading manufacturer of offshore tanks and cargo carrying units (CCU's), therefore it is important to us that the level of quality and conformance demanded by these new container ISO standards remains high.

The idea of upgrading EN 12079 to an ISO standard is that we will have a genuine global standard to which all offshore freight containers will be designed and manufactured. This offshore container standard can be used by any national certification agency to control the design and manufacture of such containers.

The new standard is due to take effect in 2015.
