Suretank Thailand Songkarn Celebrations

Suretank Thailand Songkarn Celebrations

Friday 10th April saw the beginning of the Songkarn holidays in Thailand, and the event was celebrated with the same enthusiasm and excitement that has become the norm for this time of year in our Suretank Thailand headquarters.

The Songkarn festival is celebrated every year in Thailand from the 13th to the 15th of April, and represents the beginning of the Thai New Year, also coinciding with many other calendars in South and Southeast Asia. The festive occasion is also in keeping with the Buddhist/Hindu solar calendar.

On Friday, our final working day before closing until the 18th, we began the events by hosting ‘Suretank Way’ activities, where we discussed the different initiatives that help Suretank maintain our position as the world-leading manufacturer of tanks and CCUs for the Offshore Oil and Gas Industry. Concepts such as our LEAN and 5s programmes were revisited, and great value was taken from the activity.
8.30-10.00 saw the preparation of the best varieties of food to offer to the visiting monks, with everyone from Suretank dressed for the occasion in their finest attire. This was immediately followed by the activity called ‘Song Nam, Rot Nam, and Sat Nam’, which lasted until lunch time. This event, which involves the bathing of a Buddha image, began with the offering of flowers, candles and incense sticks to the image. Lustral water was the sprinkled onto the Buddha image, signifying bathing and acting as a mark of respect. This ritual also included the bathing of the elders and respected ones. The elders and respected people then offered their blessings, and the activity ended with the playful splashing of water on one another!

The Songkran festival is very much related to water, since people believe that water splashing will induce abundant rainfalls in the incoming year. Water is also a symbol of fertility and is used to clean up bad things. As a result, water is used widely in different ceremonies and rites of passage.

Following the lunch break, the ‘Suretank Way’ activities continued, which proved to be an excellent way of realigning fundamental company objectives for the forthcoming year. The day then wrapped up at 4pm, with everyone wishing one another a happy Songkarn holiday!
